Danxiashan UNESCO Global Geopark and Longyan UNESCO Global Geopark Establish Sister Geopark Relationship

  On December 20th, Danxiashan UNESCO Global Geopark and Longyan UNESCO Global Geopark officially established sister Geopark relationship, with the signing ceremony held at Danxiashan. Chen Fang, Deputy Director of Danxiashan Administrative Committee, Shaoguan and Fu Wenyuan, Director of Longyan Geopark Conservation and Development Center, signed the agreement on behalf of both parties. Zhang Yuanhai, Senior Engineer of the Institute of Karst Geology, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, and representatives from Danxiashan’s sister Geoparks such as Alxa, Zhangjiajie, Yandangshan, and Taining UGGps witnessed this significant moment.

  Both Danxiashan and Longyan are located at 25°N latitude and are famous for their unique danxia landscape. Danxiashan, named for its characteristic of "Red as the crimson lily, brilliant like the morning glow," is the namesake of the “danxia landscape.” It is a World Natural Heritage Site and one of the first UNESCO Global Geoparks. Longyan UGGps, newly designated as a UGGp in 2024, boasts red cliffs, dramatic rock walls and towering peaks, earning it the acclaim of being one of the “Twin Wonders of Danxia,” alongside Danxiashan. This partnership symbolizes the "perfect harmony" of the danxia sisters and serves as a model for collaborative development between establised and newly recognized UGGps.

  Both parties will engage in in-depth exchanges and cooperation in geoheritage conservation, science popularization, tourism promotion, personnel training, information technology infrastructure, and sustainable development. They aim to share resources, create platforms for collaboration, enhance mutual visibility, and collectively elevate the sustainable development of UGGps to a new level.

Cooperation and Exchange Meeting

  Following the signing ceremony, a symposium was held by China Danxia -- South Karst World Natural Heritage Professional Conservation Committee. Representing the distinct danxia and karst landscapes, China Danxia and South Karst possess significant scientific, aesthetic, and ecological value. During the symposium, participants discussed conservation strategies for natural heritage sites, shared management practices, and explored ways to advance scientific research. In the future, the China Danxia -- South Karst World Natural Heritage Professional Conservation Committee will further strengthen cooperation and exchanges, promote interaction among heritage sites, and jointly advance the conservation and management of World Natural Heritage.
