  Cave Ecosystem

The caves in Danxiashan are formed due to differential weathering. Specifically, the different hardness of rock layers, such as conglomerate layers and sandstone layers, results in varying resistance to weathering. Softer rock layers weather and erode more easily, creating depressions that form flat caves. Unlike karst landscape caves, these caves have higher oxygen levels, lower humidity, simpler cave systems, and are less enclosed, making them ideal habitats for many plants. Some caves are dominated by mosses, others by herbaceous plants, and some even host vines or shrubs.
