Bamboo weaving is a traditional folk craft in Renhua, essential for agricultural and daily life in rural areas. Over years of continuous production and improvement by local farmers, Renhua has accumulated rich weaving techniques. By integrating bamboo weaving techniques from neighboring regions such as Hunan and Jiangxi, Renhua has developed its own unique style.
The main steps in the bamboo weaving process include selecting bamboo, splitting the bamboo, soaking, stripping the bamboo into thin strips, creating fine bamboo threads, and weaving. The outer layer of bamboo with the skin is called "green bamboo," while the inner layer without the skin is called "yellow bamboo." Green bamboo is ideal for weaving intricate and delicate items, while yellow bamboo, being less flexible, is typically used for making larger bamboo products.
Due to the durability and affordability of bamboo woven products, locals cut bamboo from the mountains and weave it into everyday items, which are then sold at local markets to supplement household income.
In 2018, the Renhua Bamboo Weaving Technique was listed in the seventh batch of intangible cultural heritage of Shaoguan City.
